What is Therapeutic Massage?

Massage is a manual manipulation of the body's soft tissue for the purpose of stimulating circulation and promoting relaxation. It has been used in many world cultures for more that 4,000 years. Massage allows you a quiet time to focus on yourself and become more connected to your body.

Massage is generally used for the reduction of stress and pain. It has been shown to boost the immune system as well.

Since most diseases are exacerbated by stress, massage can help you become and stay healthier.

Massage can help with following:

  • stress reduction
  • anxiety
  • muscle aches and pains
  • sleep problems
  • depression
  • immune system function
  • sports conditioning

What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is primarily used for relaxation. Cream or oil may be used with light strokes. Usually, this is a full body massage. You may want to have some areas skipped or opt to have the massage therapist work on all of your body.

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue massage is a goal-oriented massage. With this type of work, the massage therapist may use her forearms, elbows or thumbs to apply pressure. Deep tissue work can be used in conjunction with Swedish massage to loosen the muscles in a specific area, or by itself for a mini-target session.

What is Myofascial/Trigger Point Massage?

Myofascial/Trigger Point massage is the slowest type of body work. This type of work is used to relieve aches and pains. Lotions are not used. Instead, the therapist will apply pressure, using the palm of her hand or finger tips. You may be asked to breathe during this session, or move your arms or legs during a stroke that muscles be better accessed.

What Can I Expect During My Massage?

Before your massage, the massage therapist will gather information about you, such as any allergies, recent surgeries, illnesses or accidents, whether you are pregnant, what medications you are taking, if you have had a massage before, the type of massage and how long ago it was.

After the initial assessment, you will have a few minutes to yourself in the room to get onto the massage table. The massage therapist will leave the room, so you may have privacy. At this point, you may get undressed, taking off only the amount of clothing that you are comfortable with. There will be a space provided for your personal items and clothing.

During the session, the massage therapist will check with you about the pressure of the strokes. Feel free to speak up at any time. We want you to be sure you get the most out of your time with us.

Chiropractic and Massage Therapy

Millons of people seek chiropractic care or massage therapy to relieve or prevent pain and limited mobility. These two complementary therapies, especially in combination, form a powerful healing approach to relieve pain and increase your body's mobility and resilience. Over time, they offer a uniquely effective way to support your ongoing vitality and well-being.

Mutually Supportive Therapies

Adding massage therapy to your chiropractic care program can increase its effectiveness.

* Recovery is faster and more complete when you address multiple components of your condition.
* Chiropractic adjustment often proceeds more easily when circulation is improved and your body and mind are relaxed.
* Adjustments hold longer with less muscle tension.

If you find that pain presists, recurs or even worsens after your massage, chiropractic could help.

  • Chiropractic may give immediate relief as joints are restored to mobility.
  • Soft tissue often heals quickly once it is no longer subjected to the stress of misaligned joints.
  • Chiropractic adjustments can sometimes relax deep layers of soft tissue that can be difficult to reach with massage.
  • Dr. Guzzardo can use x-rays and state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques to evaluate other possible causes for your pain and make appropriate referrals if necessary.

Chiropractors and massage therapists generally agree that treatments should be scheduled on the same day. Massage and chiropractic are both useful, but have been much more powerful together.
